All you ever hear about Mexico is how dangerous it is, and not without reason. My experience in the world's 13th-largest economy, however, was quite the opposite. From the impressive limestone cliffs in the northeast, to the massive metropolitan center, to the indigenous diversity of the south, Mexico offers a uniqueness and completeness that few countries can match.
As my first stop outside my home country, it took me a while to warm up to being abroad and to explore at the level I have since become more accustomed to, writing this months later. As a result, after spending two months there, I had hardly scratched the surface of what it has to offer.
Unsurprisingly, what I connected with most were my final three weeks, in Oaxaca and Chiapas. Oaxaca City and San Cristóbal de las Casas were my favorite Mexican cities smaller than bustling Mexico City. What they offered felt fresh—oozing with their own version of Mexican culture: culinary, customary, in dress, and architectural.
